ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM

“The whole concept [of ‘people stories’] started when I was in Amsterdam three years ago, on tour with my last album," UMI shared with Melodic Magazine, sharing how some fans took her out for dinner and shared a plate of Mango Sticky Rice. Telling her about their stories, and “how they had eaten like five plates of it on their first date. And while I’m eating it, it all clicks, and I’m, like, “Oh! I want to write a song about them and call it Mango Sticky Rice, in dedication to this moment that they shared with me.”

A record founded on shared encounters with pure souls, UMI takes inspiration from the special stories that people hold. All in all, she serves relatable and heartfelt pieces that make some of her best songs yet. Exploring the depths of human experience, and how life stories connect, “UMI traverses soul, R&B, folk, and pop, singing of ego, healing, identity, and connection,” Clash Magazine writes. 

“We all live very similar lives, same colors, slightly different hues. I find that to be very comforting. While writing this album, I found myself in every story I was expressing,” UMI shared in a statement via Clash Magazine. “For me, learning to accept even the darkest colors of life was deeply healing and possible through relating to others.”
