Being one of L.A.’s top venues is a title we hold near and dear to our hearts. And THIS time around!? Whew. We might’ve outdone ourselves. TWO nights of sun-drenched neon-lit time-machine vaporwave-esque muisc magic with none other than ANRI, the queen of City Pop herself, pulling up to The Wiltern on May 20th and May 21st to cap off our Spring season proper. Anri’s story is extremely picturesque : and it's what we all want to see from our fav artists as they age like fine wine. Born in Yamato, Kanagawa, she broke onto the scene in 1978 as a teenager with the single “Oribia o Kikinagara,” a dreamy soft-pop staple that put the whole world on her sound just as the disco wave was warming up. But it was the early 80s, AKA the classic golden City Pop era, where she became the moment. Timely!!, Heaven Beach, Bi•Ki•Ni and Wave were all seen as back-to-back classics that helped define the entire genre. And her influence is major - she has multiple platinum records like “Kanashimi ga Tomaranai,” ,long-standing collaborations with fusion legends like Lee Ritenour, and today - her resurgence with the new age of city pop girlies. We’re talking TikTok rediscovery. Vinyl reissues selling out in seconds. A whole new generation falling in love with that glossy, coastal, 80s-Japan sound. Suddenly Anri isn’t just a classic always touring artists anymore - she’s now a living legend getting the flowers she always deserved. That’s why these Wiltern shows are so special: she rarely performs outside Japan these days.
