She started covering songs from her favorite artists, and most especially “Girls Like Girls” by Hayley Kiyoko — a track that made her realize her long-kept attraction to women. “Playing the piano sparked something in me,” Perez said. “I didn’t really know how to express what I was feeling until I started writing music. The more shame and the more guilt and the more anxiety and fear that I felt at this age, the more I started to sink into writing.”
